
Forms+Surfaces: Bollard

As a Prototyping Intern with Forms+Surfaces in Pittsburgh, PA, I designed an outdoor lighting system combining efficient energy use with Dark-Sky compliance via a parametric textured surface. Interested in overlaying three-dimensional surfaces with light and shadow, I produced experimental surface swatches, aiming to make an object as intriguing during the day as at night.
Focusing this ideation on outdoor forms, I added high efficiency/spread, F+S’s streamlined style, and International Dark-Sky Association specs as goals. Landing on a notched cylinder with a polished reflector, I tested a model using Photopia, collecting data while building a works-like prototype. After meticulous trial and error, the final bollard achieves all goals, serving as a foundation for future textured light exploration. ▨
