Pixie P.330 Phobos Mk. 1
Tailless Single-Seat Jet Fighter
Spring 2021
As aircraft neared the speed of sound in the waning days of the Second World War, engineers overhauled all conventions in pursuit of faster designs. Deleting an airplane’s horizontal stabilizer showed potential for reducing drag near transonic speeds, in exchange for more complex controls.
Subsequently, the ‘tailless’ aircraft was born.
Sadly, technology of the time made early examples unstable, and often deadly. Nonetheless, tailless designs were, and still are, among the fastest aircraft in the world.
What if a stable control solution had been found sooner, and a tailless fighter reached production?
The Pixie P.330 Phobos is my response to this possibility. ▨
