Forms+Surfaces: Casting Studies
DESIGN+DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP
JUNE-AUG 2022
As a secondary project to the lighting bollard, I took an interest in casting concrete in outdoor seating and furniture during my Forms+Surfaces internship. Mixing engineering exploration with F+S’s TENSL concrete formula, I studied the internal steel-frame construction or existing products and the complex mold-design and casting processes.
Though it did not materialize into a prototype due to time constraints, I planned a seating system using the embedded steel frame to anchor external surfaces for limitless modularity. The final sketches further blend my interest in overlapping ‘woven’ supports and curving concrete end-pieces, which mimic the weightlessness of arches in an infinitely-adjustable manner. ▨
