Rochlau R-21 ‘Tamper’

VARIABLE-GEOMETRY PASSENGER JET

WINTER 2024

A variable-geometry wing, or “swing-wing”, is an engineering solution for aircraft operating in highly dynamic environments, allowing for both agile low-speed performance and high-speed transonic cruise. Featured on many military jets of the 20th century, a pilot manually controls the angle of wing sweep, allowing precise aerodynamic adaptation to operational need.

Innovative and successful, variable-geometry wings have nonetheless never seen application in passenger aircraft.

But what if they did? Modeled on early passenger jets of the formative 50s and 60s, the Rochlau R-21 ‘Tamper’ is my concept design for a mid-century swing-wing airliner. ▨
